Lettering Tattoo Bangkok
by BKK INK
Lettering and calligraphy at BKK INK covers two complementary specialities: large-scale chicano calligraphy, calligraffiti and 3D lettering, and smaller minimalist scripts, typewriter, cursive, sans-serif, in multiple languages. Every piece is an original design drawn by our artists, prepared in advance or freehand directly on the skin. Our lettering work took two awards at the Bangkok Tattoo Exhibition 2024, including 1st prize Best of Day B&G for Creativity.

Who does lettering at BKK INK?
Two artists cover lettering at BKK INK, and they work at opposite scales. Yhee takes the large chicano calligraphy pieces, Mor takes the small minimalist script. Which one suits your tattoo depends less on the words you have chosen than on the size and the placement you want.
Yhee has been with us since 2022 and works in bold chicano calligraphy at large scale, sometimes mixed with black and grey chicano realism. Calligraffiti, graffiti and three-dimensional lettering belong to the same range. For a back piece, a full forearm, or any design where the letters carry the whole composition, that is the work to look at.
Mor joined in 2012 and works at the other end of the scale, in small minimalist pieces: typewriter, cursive and clean sans-serif scripts. He tattoos in several languages and verifies Thai script in native fluency in house, which matters more than most people expect on words that locals will read for the rest of your life. He also works in Sak Yant, blackwork and old school.

Our Lettering Tattoo Process at BKK INK
Every calligraphy tattoo session at our Khaosan Road studio starts with a free consultation. You bring your quote, name, date, mantra, or idea; our team hand-letters a custom design, no clip-art fonts, no template scripts. Every composition is drawn for your body's curves and the exact placement you have in mind.
Before any needle touches skin, we print a full-size stencil and review every character together. Spelling, accents, diacritics, stroke direction in foreign scripts, you approve it in writing. For Thai, English and French, our team can also double-check meaning and spelling in-house. This protocol has been refined over 17 years of lettering work since our 2009 founding. We use the highest-grade single-use needles, vegan inks (Dynamic and Eternal, both vegan and cruelty-free), and we hold the hygiene certifications required to tattoo at European conventions. The verification step is non-negotiable: a permanent typo is the only thing worse than a bad tattoo.
Calligraphy sessions vary by scale. Small minimalist pieces (single word, short script, typewriter, sans-serif) take 1 to 3 hours in a single sitting. Large-scale chicano calligraphy, calligraffiti or 3D lettering on the back or sleeve may span two to four sessions with a two-week healing window between sittings.
Foreign script work, Thai, Sanskrit, Japanese kanji, Arabic, always includes a native-speaker consultation before finalising the stencil. Meaning, grammar, cultural context matter as much as aesthetics. We never guess.

Everything is billed by time, 3,000 THB per hour plus a 1,000 THB material fee per session, with a guaranteed maximum agreed at your free consultation before we start. How long does a calligraphy tattoo take?
Most calligraphy tattoos at BKK INK are completed in one to two sessions. A single word or short quote typically takes one to three hours in one sitting. Longer passages, full chest scripts, or multi-language compositions may require a second session, with a minimum two-week healing window between sittings.
Can you tattoo non-English text accurately?
Yes, Thai script is verified in native fluency in-house. Sanskrit and English calligraphy are reviewed internally. For Japanese kanji and Arabic, we engage native consultants before finalising any stencil. We verify meaning, grammar, stroke direction, and cultural context. We never rely on online translators alone for permanent work, too many permanent typos out there started with a Google Translate copy-paste.
What's the difference between calligraphy and script tattoos?
"Calligraphy" is the broader discipline, the art of designed letterforms drawn with intentional stroke weight, structure, and balance. It covers Old English Gothic (block blackletter), Chicano calligraphy (ornate, often large-scale with black & grey shading), calligraffiti (street-art-influenced flowing lettering), 3D lettering, modern serif (clean, typographic), hand-lettered cursive, typewriter, sans-serif, and traditional foreign scripts (Thai, Sanskrit, kanji, Arabic). "Script" tattoos are a subcategory, typically cursive or flowing styles. At BKK INK we cover the full range across our team.
How do I make sure my calligraphy tattoo won't have a spelling mistake?
We take spell-check seriously, it's the most important step in calligraphy work, refined across 17 years and thousands of lettering pieces since 2009. Before your session, we ask you to confirm the exact text in writing (message, email, or printed note). On the day, we print a full-size stencil and review every character together before placing it on skin. You sign off on the stencil. We never proceed until you are 100% satisfied with every letter. BKK INK’s lettering work won two awards at the Bangkok Tattoo Exhibition 2024, including 1st prize Best of Day B&G for Creativity.
How do I prepare for a calligraphy tattoo session?
Sleep well the night before, eat a full meal within two hours of your appointment, and stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours pre-session . If you take any medication, including blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen, ask your doctor before your session. We do not give medical advice. Moisturise the area daily for one week before your appointment, well-hydrated skin takes ink more evenly and holds fine lines better. Bring your text confirmed in writing so we can finalise the stencil immediately.
