A portrait tattoo turns a photograph, a parent, a child, an idol, a beloved pet, into permanent realistic art. At our studio, right at the end of Khaosan Road, portraits are handled exclusively by the realistic team: Ball BKK, Bon, Zia and Titun, whose portrait work has taken first prizes at conventions in Thailand and abroad.
What makes a portrait tattoo different?
A portrait lives or dies on likeness. Where most tattoos allow interpretation, a portrait must capture the exact geometry of a face, the distance between the eyes, the shape of a smile, the way light falls on a cheekbone. That is why we treat portraits as the most demanding form of realistic tattooing.
Two things decide the result before the needle touches skin: the reference photo and the size. A sharp, well-lit photograph gives the artist true detail to work from, and a portrait needs enough surface to hold that detail as skin ages, going too small is the most common mistake we talk clients out of. Black-and-grey remains the classic choice; colour portraits demand even more control over skin tones.

Who tattoos portraits at BKK INK?
Portraits go to the four realistic specialists. Titun won 1st prize Best of Portrait at the Thailand Tattoo Expo 2017 and 1st prize Best of Realistic Portrait at the Hua Hin Tattoo Convention 2015. Ball BKK, co-founder, took a 1st prize at the Mondial du Tatouage in Paris, the only Thai artist ever to win it. Bon built his reputation on hyper-realism, and Zia brings a realistic style he sometimes draws freehand directly on skin.
Pet portraits and memorial pieces
A large share of portrait requests are memorials, a grandparent, a friend, and very often a pet. Bon, our hyper-realist, says nothing in this job compares to the moment an owner sees a lost companion finished on skin. We take the same approach for animals as for people: an honest talk about the best photo, the right size and a placement that will age well.
Pricing works the way it does for every piece here: by the hour, with a maximum price agreed before the session starts, a system we switched to because it is fairer on both sides for work this unpredictable in detail.

How much does a portrait tattoo cost in Bangkok?
Portrait tattoo pricing at BKK INK is based on time, with a guaranteed price cap agreed before we start. Portrait pieces start at 4,000 THB, the rate is 3,000 THB per hour plus a 1,000 THB material fee per session. Even if a session runs longer than estimated, you never pay more than the agreed maximum.
Larger projects are quoted with a fixed cap at your free consultation, and a deposit secures your booking, from 1,000 THB for small pieces up to 3,000 THB per tattoo day for large multi-session work. See the full pricing guide.
What reference photo should I bring?
The sharpest, best-lit photo you have, ideally taken close, in daylight, without heavy filters. Phone photos work if the face is clearly detailed. Bring two or three options and the artist will tell you honestly which one will translate best to skin.
Do you tattoo portraits of pets?
