Bold black ink, ornamental, geometric and solid work

Blackwork is our deepest bench. Hack and Mor, both here since 2012, alongside Ballin and Mo cover the full range: geometric and sacred geometry, dotwork, ornamental, tribal-modern and darkside horror pieces, all in bold, saturated black at our Khaosan Road studio.

Our Blackwork Tattoo Process at BKK INK

Every blackwork tattoo Bangkok session at BKK INK starts with a free consultation. Commissions range from geometric and sacred geometry to tribal modern, dotwork and blackout coverage. You bring a reference, geometric pattern, tribal motif, sacred geometry sketch, or simply the area you want covered, and our artists design a custom piece that respects your body's natural lines.

We use the highest-grade single-use needles, professional-grade black inks (Dynamic and Eternal, both vegan and cruelty-free), and we hold the hygiene certifications required to tattoo at European conventions.

Blackwork demands more ink passes than fine line or black-and-grey shading: achieving true saturated black requires multiple layered sessions to build depth without blowouts. Each session lasts 4 to 6 hours, with breaks every 90 minutes.

For blackout sleeves we deliberately spread the work across 6-10 sessions instead of 3-4, this gives the skin time to heal between heavy saturation passes and prevents the patchy fading we see when clients rush the process elsewhere. Small geometric panels (10–20 cm) typically require one to two sessions.

Black ink is permanent and unforgiving: precision in placement, clean edges, and even saturation are non-negotiable. We never rush, and we never compromise on density, geometry, or negative space.

If you want to read about the roots of the style before you book, the Wikipedia article on blackwork is a good place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a blackwork tattoo cost in Bangkok?

Blackwork pieces start at 4,000 THB. Everything is billed by time, 3,000 THB per hour plus a 1,000 THB material fee per session, with a guaranteed maximum agreed at your free consultation before we start. You never pay more than the agreed cap.

How many sessions does a blackwork sleeve take?

Full blackwork sleeves at BKK INK typically take 4 to 10 sessions of 4 to 6 hours each. Blackout sleeves (solid black coverage) sit at the higher end due to the ink density required. We recommend at least 2 weeks between sittings to allow the skin to heal fully and the black to settle before adding the next layer.

What's the difference between blackwork and black & grey tattoo?

Blackwork uses pure, saturated black ink only, no grey wash, no dilution. The aesthetic is graphic and high-contrast: solid fills, bold linework, geometric patterns, and deliberate negative space. Black and grey tattooing uses diluted ink to create gradients, shading and photorealistic depth. Both are beautiful; they are simply different visual languages. BKK INK does both.

What blackwork styles does BKK INK specialise in?

Our artists cover the full blackwork spectrum: tribal modern (Polynesian-inspired bold linework), geometric and sacred geometry (mandalas, platonic solids, metatron's cube), dotwork (stippling and pointillism in black ink), ornamental (lace-like decorative compositions), and blackout (large surface areas filled solid black). We also blend styles, geometric with dotwork accents, tribal with sacred geometry, when the design calls for it.

How do I prepare for a blackwork tattoo session?

Sleep 8 hours the night before, eat a full meal within two hours of your appointment, hydrate well, and avoid alcohol for 24 hours pre-session. Blackwork sessions can be intense due to the heavy ink saturation, bring snacks, water and a phone charger. Wear loose clothing that exposes the tattoo area. If you take any medication, including blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen, ask your doctor before your session. We do not give medical advice. Moisturise the area daily in the week before your session for best ink absorption.

Is BKK INK recognised for blackwork tattooing?

Yes, since 2009, our 12 artists have realised 40,000+ tattoos across twelve styles. Blackwork is shared by Hack, Mor, Ballin and Mo. Awards include Best Collaboration Tattoo Asia (Singapore Ink Show) and recognition at Mondial du Tatouage Paris. 2,000+ reviews cumulatively across Google and Facebook (4.8/5 average). Arguably one of Thailand's most awarded tattoo studios.
